School Memories?

I was only at Sloane for my last school year, having moved up from Hertfordshire, but I made several good friends but lost contact when I left. Vladimir Gruick was one and a chap we called Mitch another.

What has happened in your life since you left Sloane?

I was apprenticed in electrical engineering then had several jobs, many years as an electrician on the buses and finally as a Technical Engineering Manager at Hornsey TSC until retirement at 60 in 2009. I married in 1973 remain happily so living in Southgate. My other main occupation is being a musician, and played thousands of gigs over the years, mainly home recording in recent years.

Where were you born?

Abbotts Lanley, Hertfordshire. The only person of note that I'm aware of born there was William Breakspeare, the only English Pope.

Where did you live when you were at Sloane?

We had a flat in Edgerton Gardens initially. Lord Lucan's sisters lived in the flat above and Ruth Ellis lived up the road at one point. We moved to Finchley at the beginning of 1965 and I travelled by Tube to school.

Which Primary school did you attend?

It was one in Watford, followed by Bovingdon CP when we moved there when I was eight years old.

When and where were you married?

John Keble Church, Mill Hill NW7 on 27th January, my 24th birthday.

Hobbies/Interests:

Mainly music, playing the guitar, preparing and recording music.

Watford!

TV/Films/Radio: What are your favourite films and programmes. Who are your favourite actors/actresses?

Many films, Some Like it Hot, Spartacus, Singing in the Rain, anything by Clint Eastwood. TV likes are MASH, On The Buses, Steptoe and many others.

Books: Fiction or non-fiction? Favourite books/authors?

I used to read a lot of Sci-fi, everything by Isaac Asimov. The Sharpe series and lots of comedy books.

Ken Dodd, Mike Harding, Tommy Cooper, all old school.

What are your pet hates?

Offensive language, impatience, bad driving and Rap music.

Nothing comes to mind at present.

I remember Ralph, as he was in the fifth year at the same time as me, I was only at Sloane for that year.  He tended to keep himself to himself, although was afable enough if you approached him, which I did once as a sort of challenge by some of my classmates.  I managed to contact him a short while ago but he didn't remember me at all, which is fair enough as it was fifty-six years ago, and told me he felt out of the mainstream.  He was the first black person I'd ever had contact with, me coming from the leafy county of Hertfordshire, but still think of him as a decent bloke.
